CHARLES Z FISH'S
PRE-WAR GIBSON
BANJOS
My purpose in creating this website has been to learn as much as I can about the pre-war
Gibson banjos that have been in my collection. I have included in the descriptions of these
instruments basically everything that I have been able to learn about them. There are
probably many inaccuracies. I am hoping that visitors to this site will find it informative. I
am also hoping that those of you who are more expert than I will be willing to correct the
inaccuracies and to provide any further information about these banjos that you think I
may find helpful.
Greg Earnest's website on pre-war Gibson banjos served as a model for this
undertaking. Much of what I have learned is from Roger Siminoff's 1981 article on
Gibson Banjos in
Frets Magazine and his chapters in Walter Carter's book, Gibson
Guitars - 100 Years of an American Icon
. Gruhn's Guide to Vintage Guitars by George
Gruhn and Walter Carter has also been helpful. I found Ross Presting's article on the
Trujo at the
Banjo Express Website. Tom Biggs' website about these instruments has
been invaluable. My thanks to these authors for their unknowing contributions to this
project.
