STYLE 2 NECK
Here is the walnut neck blank, purchased from First Quality.
Ken and I have cut the truss rod slot in the neck and carved the
truss rod pocket in the peghead. We put in a truss rod from First
Quality, glued in a filler piece, and attached the "ears" to the
peghead.
Here are some photos of Ken
making the support structure for
the neck from some scrap wood.
We also made some thin
wooden contour gauges from
the diagrams in
Roger
Siminoff's book.
This photo shows the neck near
completion of shaping.
Here is the neck, ready to receive
the peghead veneer. In the
background are an original style 2
tenor neck and a repro style 3,
which served as models.
Here is a close-up of the heel.
And here is the back of the peghead.
Next to it are a piece of maple veneer
and on top of it a sheet of "antique
white pearloid," purchased from

Following Greg Rich's
instructions on
Banjo Hangout, I
traced the design from a style 2
peghead. I have scanned into
the computer a reverse image.
I tried transferring the design to the pearloid, using
an image printed from my computer. That didn't
work, and Greg suggested copying the image with
an older copier. I did, and I was then able to transfer
it to the pearloid. I applied the image to the pearloid
and then wiped the back side with some laquer
thinner, again as described by Greg on a Banjo
Hangout thread.
Then I completed the design
using a Rapidograph and India
Ink.
I tried several different glues
before I found one that worked
well, Weldwood Contact Cement
(in the green can.) I have glued
the pearloid to the peghead and
then cut the peghead to the
shape of the style 2.
Ken and I have used a
jig to cut the peghead
at a right angle to the
plane of the fretboard,
as described by
Siminoff.
Here is the back of the peghead.
I have glued a strip of pearloid to a slotted and profiled
First Quality rosewood fretboard. I have drawn the frets,
to correspond with the slots, and I have reproduced the
designs of the style 2 neck in India Ink.  These designs
are at the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, 12th, 15th, 17th and
19th frets. I think that I will put a "Charles Z Fish" logo
on the 22nd fret, but haven't come up with a design yet.
